This morning I'd like to share something that made a huge difference in my health, and you can do it too.
Like Dr. Terry Wahls, who reversed her Multiple Sclerosis and now helps thousands of others to do the same, I had to get a ton of veggies into my system every day in order to overcome my seven autoimmune conditions. I found out by my genetic testing that I also had the COMT SNP, which means I don't methylate properly, which leads to mitochondrial dysfunction (a major cause of extreme fatigue and illness). Many people with autoimmune and chronic illness have the same problem. The good news is, we can
TAKE CONTROL by simply eating more foods that give us extra methyl groups, i.e., plenty of veggie's, especially green leafies.
Isn't science cool? Now we know how to test for these deficiencies that cause chronic illness, and FIX THEM.
Of course, eating plenty of raw veggies is good for you in so many ways! They reduce inflammation and pain, provide the necessary nutrients for our gut microbiome, stabilize our blood sugar, help our hormones function properly, help us maintain a healthy weight, and on and on and on and on and on.
So even if you don't suffer with a chronic illness, making sure you get a boat-load of veggies in your diet every day is shown to actually PREVENT chronic illness.
I tried to eat my 8-10 cups of raw veggies per day in salads... but it took so long to eat, and then I was stuffed! Plus, who wants to spend the time chopping that much salad every day, especially if you have more than one person to feed?
So, I came up with a better idea: A Vegi-Shake.
I love it. Maybe you will too!
What a HUGE difference it made in my energy, pain, inflammation and hormones! Why? It's the veggies of course, but I also add other scientifically proven anti-inflammatory and energy producing nutrients. The scientist geek in me can't help but micro-manage my nutrition for the best results.
It only took a few days of drinking my Vegi-Shake before I noticed a big difference in how I felt. My energy got better, my hormones stabilized (even with menopause in full swing), my pain and inflammation decreased dramatically, I even slept better!
Here's the kicker that proved it to me: After I had been drinking this daily for a few weeks, I forgot to make it one day. I was so busy that morning, and I told myself, "I'll make it tonight". By about noon I was dragging, and not feeling well. I was getting cranky and achy, even though I ate a healthy breakfast. I wondered, "What's happening? I've been feeling so much better lately!"
Then I remembered... "Oh, I forgot to make my Vegi-Shake!"
Could it make that big of a difference, I wondered?
By the time I got home late in the afternoon, I was really a mess. In a lot of pain, really irritable, and just exhausted. So, I made my shake and drank some right away. Within about an hour, my mood changed and I was laughing with my granddaughter. I jumped up and did a little house keeping. I was really astonished at how much better I felt.
The power of food...the right food. Food really is medicine!
So here's how I make my Vegi-Shake.
I buy a bunch of ORGANIC veggies, all different varieties and as many different colors as I can find. Ya, ORGANIC, otherwise you are putting more toxins into your system and that just gets in the way of your health and healing. Just tell yourself not to worry about the price, because what you save in suffering is MORE THAN worth it.
Every morning, I take those veggies and put them into a blender. Not a juicer, as you need the pulp for the fiber (your microbiome LOVES it).
To give an example, I put half a big beat, two stalks of celery, two carrots, about 1/4 purple cabbage, about 4 cups of super greens (kale, spinache, arugula), a handful of dandilion leaves, two chard leaves, about an inch of ginger root (yum), about a cup of broccoli sprouts, half a zucchini. But you can vary this to your taste. Just don't leave out the cabbage and greens as they are a staple. All these veggies have different properties that your body needs every day (unless you have a food sensitivity, then leave them out of course).
Add some fresh filtered water (never ever tap), and grind them up.
To make this a complete meal that keeps your blood sugar low and halts sugar cravings, I add some healthy fats and protein. Typically I use nuts that have been soaked in water overnight, like organic pumpkin, sunflower, chia, almonds, etc. That gives both healthy fats & proteins. However, I like to add Bulletproof Brain Octane oil as well. About a 1/2 cup of the nuts and about 2 tablespoons of the oil (go easy at first until you can handle a full two tablespoons as it can give some people diarrhea if you aren't used to it). If you can't do the nuts do a good organic protein powder made with pea protein and NO SUGAR. If you can't afford the Bulletproof oil, use a good organic olive, coconut or avocado oil.
To make it taste delicious, I add a small amount of fruit... typically an apple and a cup of organic frozen berries to make it cold, and about 1/4 tsp of pure stevia powder (never the mixtures). You can drink it just like this... just add enough water because it gets thick.
If you don't have SIBO, you can also add some kombucha and Kefir to thin it out and give you more natural probiotics (and if you think you do have SIBO or SIFO, call me... I'll help you fix it.)
Drink this every day and you will notice an amazing improvement in your health... don't skimp... drink the whole thing throughout the day.
If you don't like it, vary the flavor with healthy fruits. I sometimes add a BAI drink for flavor but the erytritol can give people some problems so be careful with that.
